American Airlines

American Airlines is a leading global airline with a long-standing reputation for quality service. However, their mobile app had been struggling with an outdated interface and inefficient navigation, which negatively impacted the overall user experience. To address this, my redesign focused on modernizing the app and streamlining its functionality. By enhancing the app's usability, the goal was to better serve the airline's diverse audience, including frequent travelers, business professionals, and vacationers. As a large corporation in the aviation industry, American Airlines needed an app that matched its global presence and commitment to service.

Problem/Challenges

The American Airlines app was due for a significant update to address a variety of user pain points. The app’s interface hid important information and relied on outdated interactions, such as a swipe-up function for key features. Navigating through multiple pages during the booking process added unnecessary complexity, frustrating users and leading to a less-than-ideal experience.

Objectives

Modernize the interface: Create a clean, contemporary design that aligns with current app standards and the brand’s image.

Simplify navigation: Reduce the number of screens and streamline the flight booking process.

Enhance consistency: Ensure that the user experience feels cohesive, with consistent loading screens and seamless in-app navigation.

Improve accessibility: Make key features easier to access without overwhelming the user.

Lo-Fi & Hi-Fi Screens

Outcome/Results

Simplified Booking Process: Users now have fewer screens to navigate, reducing frustration and improving satisfaction during the flight booking process.

Consistent User Journey: The app now features standardized loading screens and transitions, providing a cohesive experience from start to finish.

Increased Accessibility: By eliminating the swipe-up feature and ensuring all actions remain within the app, the redesign improved ease of use and reduced confusion for users.

Lessons Learned

Successes: Modernizing the app and simplifying the navigation process drastically improved the user experience.

Areas for Improvement: As I continue refining my skills, I see opportunities to further enhance the app’s accessibility features and introduce personalized user experiences, such as tailored flight recommendations.

Conclusion

Revamping the American Airlines app was a rewarding challenge that pushed me to improve both my technical and design skills. My journey from learning how to scroll in Figma to mastering full prototypes has been a milestone in my growth as a designer. I’m proud of the impact my redesign has had on the user experience, and I’m excited to continue exploring new ways to improve app functionality in the future.
